Course Summary
The rapid development of technology and the need to develop 21st-century skills are driving us to STEAM education - the interdisciplinary discipline that engages students around the themes of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. The European Commission and other bodies internationally are promoting the development of STEAM programmes. It is generally accepted by global educational research that STEAM methodology will be the dominant form of education in the 21st century. The STEAM approach promotes a new framework for combining knowledge between the STEAM disciplines and integrates experiential learning. It also helps to develop skills that lead to entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity, key 21st-century skills.
Enhancing such skills is at the heart of STEAM education. Moreover, graduates from these disciplines are expected to play a vital role in developing meaningful solutions to societal problems. There is therefore a great need for training of teachers who will implement STEAM education.
