Course Summary

Program Objectives

The master program of study in Adult Education is designed in order to accept adult educators, instructors, and trainers as well as any other professionals that educate and train adults from different subject matters and fields. The program is developed having in mind the continuous and increasing complexity and demands of the adult educator profession regardless of field and specialization. Additionally, various other elements were taken into consideration when designing this program of study. First of the all, the fact that the adult educators work in various educational learning environments/settings: formal, informal and non-formal. Secondly, there is an urgent need for an overview critique of the basic concepts and principles of adult education in macro-level and/or micro-level. Additionally, the program is designed in order to incorporate the effective integration of new and innovative teaching methods, techniques and policies as well as the use of technology in modern learning environments. The program also aims to provide the theoretical, pedagogical as well as practical framework for the students to examine the concepts of adult education, learning theories, curriculum development, teaching and evaluation. The program aims to provide the students with the necessary knowledge and skills in order to be able to take over leadership positions and meet the needs and demands of the society in regards to adult education. Finally, the program has also a research orientation in order to promote action research and transform the teaching and learning approaches in the field of adult education.

The language of instruction is Greek.

Key Learning Outcomes

The indented learning outcomes of the master program of study in Adult Education are delineated below: 

  1. The complete overview of the basic concepts and principles of adult education, its teaching and evaluation and the understanding of their major interactions. 
  2. The targeted integration of teaching strategies and active educational techniques, as well as the integration of new technologies in the teaching and learning process, employing pedagogical approaches that maximize the added value of learning.
  3. The understanding of differences of adult teaching and learning needs and approaches and their effective implementation through the study of adult learning theories.
  4. The design, implementation and evaluation of an adult education program employing new methods and innovative approaches as well as incorporating new technologies and digital learning environments.
  5. The understanding of the dynamics and reasons of development, and the current and future needs and demands of the adult education field, as it evolves in Cyprus, Greece and Europe.
  6. The development of new knowledge by systematic research activity focused on the main issues/ subjects that characterize the current program of study and the growth of research orientations and interests among adult educators.
  7. The emergence of action research as an important tool for adult educators in their daily professional activities in order to effectively employ modern teaching approaches towards achieving the objectives of adult education. 
  8. The development of analytical and critical thinking and fruitful dialogue and cooperation to address the problems and challenges related to adult education.

Career Prospects

The graduates will develop the necessary educational, theoretical and practical background on issues related to Adult Education so that they can cope with the complexity of their profession, even if they come from different disciplines, fields and specializations.

Graduates of the Master will be able to work in various sectors, organisations and businesses related to education, training and vocational training for adults of different disciplines, fields and specialisations.

How to apply

Candidates for a master degree must submit a recognized bachelor degree or qualification deemed to be equivalent to degree level as well as the official transcripts (grade reports) of their first-degree studies. In addition, there could be special requirements for various master programs.

Application deadline

Frederick University academic year consists of the fall and spring semesters. The calendar is arranged so that students may start classes either during the last week of September or the first week of February. Candidates may submit an application for admission in any of the semesters. Due to the fact that formalities for the issue of an entry visa take at least 6 weeks, candidates are urged to file an application at least 8 weeks prior to the expected date of enrolment. Students are expected to be on campus prior to the beginning of the intended semester/session. In response to arising need, courses could be provided within the summer period.

Entry requirements

Qualification requirements

Candidates who are nationals of EU countries can enter Cyprus as visitors. On arrival at Frederick University they must submit to the Admission Office the following:

  1. A fully completed application form.
  2. An application fee of Euro 25 (non-refundable).
  3. Attested (certified true) copies of their academic qualifications.
  4. Evidence of proficiency in English, (if available).
  5. A photocopy of their passport. The passport should be valid for at least one year from the date of their arrival to Cyprus.
  6. A recent certificate of good conduct issued by the police of the candidate's country of origin or residence, if necessary translated in Greek or English. The good conduct certificate should be original and issued less than 6 months prior to the beginning of the semester for which the student is applying. The names and titles of the persons issuing and certifying the document should be clearly stated therein.

Furthermore, they must pay the registration fee, the semester tuition fees, and register for subjects. Next they must apply to the Migration Department for a temporary residence permit. The application to the Migration Department must be supported by evidence that they have paid their tuition fees for the semester, have enough funds for their initial living expenses and have obtained local health insurance coverage.

B. Applicants from non EU countries
International Students from non EU countries need to have a valid student visa in order to be allowed to enter Cyprus. The issue of an entry visa takes about 6 weeks from the date of the submission of the application. It is therefore recommended that candidates submit their application at least 8 weeks before the beginning of the semester. Cyprus Migration Department requirements in respect of the issue of a student visa, which from time to time may be modified, are available to candidates in a separate document.

Applicants are requested to contact the Office of Admissions to receive information and guidance regarding the proper documentation and formalities to be followed.

Additional entry requirements

Specific Admission Requirements

The admission requirements are specified in the General Student Regulations as well as in the Frederick University Studies Regulation. A good undergraduate degree from a recognized university or the equivalent international qualification or an acceptable professional qualification is considered the main academic requirement. Additionally, very good knowledge of Greek and English is extremely important. Advantage is considered the demonstration of satisfactory knowledge of English language (suitable qualifications may include TOEFL, IELTS, GCSE, IGCSE, Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English or equivalent). Finally, work experience in the field of adult education should be also considered as an advantage. 

Prospective students are expected to submit their application and all related documents, such as copies of their degrees, transcripts, two letters of recommendation from professors or supervisors in the workplace and a research interest report. Where the Evaluation Program Committee deems necessary, the candidates may be asked for an interview meeting.  

By the expiry of the application deadline for admission to the program, the Evaluation Program Committee will evaluate prospective students based on specific criteria, such as academic records, recommendation letters, digital literacy, research interests, interview, work experience, knowledge of Greek and / or English etc. The committee decisions are announced by electronic mail or otherwise to all candidates.

English language requirements

The students are expected to be fluent in Greek and English (the program will be taught in Greek). Proof of fluent English could be demonstrated by the possession of GCE, TOEFL (70+), or IELTS (6+) certificate (degree holders from English speaking universities are excluded). The University offers non ECTS English Language I and English Language II classes for prospective students who do not complete the above requirements.
