Course Summary

Purpose of the P.M.S. in "International Relations" is to provide to executives of the state, public and private sector, to the Officers of the Armed Forces, the Security Forces, the Civil Defense, the Fire Brigade and the Coast Guard - Hellenic Coast Guard, to the employees of the Ministries, Interior and other Ministries, Semi-Governmental Organizations, Autonomous State Organizations of Public or Private Law of the Hellenic and Cypriot Republics, as well as individuals aiming to pursue careers in international organizations and government agencies, as well as in their business groups and companies , the required knowledge and skills (crisis, analysis and synthesis) in order to handle national and international security issues, critical in everyday life for the individuals themselves,

In particular, in the field of Crisis Management and Dispute Resolution the program aims to provide students with the epistemological and theoretical background of the approach of conflicts, conflicts, confrontations, war situations by states and third parties involved in the crisis in a broad perspective, examining the dynamics. the perspectives and practical problems mentioned in the expanded grid of modern international, transnational, intra-state, ethnic and inter-communal crises.

Through case reports, emphasis is placed on issues, mechanisms, practices of forecasting, avoiding, managing, regulating and resolving conflicts and crises, while at the same time understanding the conflicts and crises with reference to international and socio-political processes in the institutions and level and the structural cultural differences that are the causes of crisis and conflict.

Theoretical schemes, hypotheses and positions arising from them are developed in the field, such as security and peaceful cooperation based on the dominant modern analytical approaches of international politics and the theory of international relations.

In the Strategy specialization, the program aims to provide a comprehensive approach to the concept, term and nature of strategy and the evolution of strategic studies from antiquity to the present, incorporating classical models of strategy development, objectives, means, tactics and results, but also contemporary security and topical issues, such as the changing nature of the international system, the emergence of non-state actors, new forms of war, terrorism, organized crime, cybersecurity, nuclear proliferation, information services etc.  

Historical data are examined, which influenced the development of strategic studies as an academic discipline and are studied in detail through case studies, especially during the Cold War, but also in the post-Cold War era, the connection of strategy with policy and practice. volatile international system, with a focus on the respective Great Powers.

The content of the specialization also refers to the design of the high strategy, the deterrence dynamics, the use of force, the modern military strategy and the ways of its organization and method, the management of the opponent's miscalculations and estimates, focusing on the top strategists.

In the field of Energy Security and International Political Economy, the program aims to deepen the theoretical formats and historical context of the global political economy, aiming at its understanding and interconnection with energy and energy security with emphasis on the political and economic data of the 20th state ( ) and the 21st century (today's globalized structure of the world).

Examples of energy security and the essential role and importance of energy in shaping the broader context of international political economy, the interaction of economics with politics, the interdependence of both local and international, domestic events, as well as changes in the supply, supply and demand of energy in relation to its effects on states, their geostrategic importance and the economic impact on society, the consumer, individuals, in the context of their daily lives.

Theoretical and analytical approaches provide the student with familiarity with the reference environment, the primary data sources in relation to the global energy supply, as well as the use of data in the context of his research.

 

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

The Program provides training and specialization to young scientists who will acquire the necessary equipment to:

  • Familiarize themselves with the basic theoretical forms of international relations and international political economy and interpret according to the dominant approaches phenomena of previous and modern world importance.
  • They develop critical thinking and analytical skills in terms of the role, importance and interaction and interconnection of state actors, macroeconomic figures, strategy and prevention, avoidance, conflict management.
  • Recognize and evaluate the functioning of political leadership and foreign policy, decision-making teams, the elite and the media in crisis planning and management.
  • They project and contrast different perspectives on the foundation of the argument / arguments / key research questions, adopting and defining a specific and clearly defined methodology and method.
  • They publish scientific texts of academic standards, which are subject to specific rules and regulations.

Upon completion of the program students are expected to be able to:

  • Increase the knowledge and skills for the basic concepts, theoretical schools, analytical approaches that concern the widest network of international studies as an academic discipline.
  • They apply the theory to contemporary data and manifestations of phenomena of modern international politics.
  • They plan programs and suggest modifying interventions in existing structures of production of implemented policy.
  • Understand and evaluate the essence and content of the power factors in the context of the strategy, the relations of specific states with other actors and actors of the international system.
  • Identify what scientific activity in the scientific field consists of, study and evaluate critical research results, conclusions and methods.

Assessment Method

For successful completion of the program and the award of the degree the student must have completed ninety (90) ECTS, which will result from the successful completion of four compulsory courses, two compulsory elective courses, one elective course, a research methodology seminar and a postgraduate course. .

How to apply

Candidates for a master degree must submit a recognized bachelor degree or qualification deemed to be equivalent to degree level as well as the official transcripts (grade reports) of their first-degree studies. In addition, there could be special requirements for various master programs.

Application deadline

Frederick University academic year consists of the fall and spring semesters. The calendar is arranged so that students may start classes either during the last week of September or the first week of February. Candidates may submit an application for admission in any of the semesters. Due to the fact that formalities for the issue of an entry visa take at least 6 weeks, candidates are urged to file an application at least 8 weeks prior to the expected date of enrolment. Students are expected to be on campus prior to the beginning of the intended semester/session. In response to arising need, courses could be provided within the summer period.

Entry requirements

Qualification requirements

Candidates who are nationals of EU countries can enter Cyprus as visitors. On arrival at Frederick University they must submit to the Admission Office the following:

  1. A fully completed application form.
  2. An application fee of Euro 25 (non-refundable).
  3. Attested (certified true) copies of their academic qualifications.
  4. Evidence of proficiency in English, (if available).
  5. A photocopy of their passport. The passport should be valid for at least one year from the date of their arrival to Cyprus.
  6. A recent certificate of good conduct issued by the police of the candidate's country of origin or residence, if necessary translated in Greek or English. The good conduct certificate should be original and issued less than 6 months prior to the beginning of the semester for which the student is applying. The names and titles of the persons issuing and certifying the document should be clearly stated therein.

Furthermore, they must pay the registration fee, the semester tuition fees, and register for subjects. Next they must apply to the Migration Department for a temporary residence permit. The application to the Migration Department must be supported by evidence that they have paid their tuition fees for the semester, have enough funds for their initial living expenses and have obtained local health insurance coverage.

B. Applicants from non EU countries
International Students from non EU countries need to have a valid student visa in order to be allowed to enter Cyprus. The issue of an entry visa takes about 6 weeks from the date of the submission of the application. It is therefore recommended that candidates submit their application at least 8 weeks before the beginning of the semester. Cyprus Migration Department requirements in respect of the issue of a student visa, which from time to time may be modified, are available to candidates in a separate document.

Applicants are requested to contact the Office of Admissions to receive information and guidance regarding the proper documentation and formalities to be followed.

Additional entry requirements

Personal interviews are not normally required as part of the admission process; however, Frederick University reserves the right to request an interview before making a final decision on accepting an applicant.

English language requirements

The language of instruction is Greek.
