Course Summary

The Nautical Science programme at CyMA aims in training Officers on merchant ships, based on the standards of the STCW International Convention (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers).

Profile

Cyprus is one of the largest ship-management centers in Europe and worldwide. More than 200 ship-owing, ship – managing and shipping – related companies are based in Cyprus providing excellent growth prospects and business opportunities in the shipping sector. The continuing growth of the shipping sector resulted to the need of specialized staff, with proper academic and technical skills, ready to take over the challenging positions within the Maritime industry.

The Cyprus Maritime Academy in collaboration with Intercollege and under the auspices of the University of Nicosia, offers Maritime programs designed to provide the necessary academic knowledge, professional skills and competences to Deck and Engine Officers who wish to pursue a career on merchant marine ships.

Purpose

The aim of the Nautical Science program and the Diploma – Class ‘C’ Marine Engineer is the proper training of Deck and Engine Officers accordingly, in order for them to acquire key positions on merchant marine ships. The training provided is in accordance with the standards of the United Nations International Maritime Organization (IMO) and it is in full compliance with the provisions set out by the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and
Watch-keeping for Seafarers (STCW).

General Objectives

  1. Prepare students to become successful professional officers in charge of a navigational watch on the demanding area of Nautical science;
  2. Provide graduates the necessary knowledge and technical skills to excel in the marine industry as Second Officers and then promote into Chief Officers & Masters;
  3. Provide students with the fundamental principles of navigation and ship handling, safe ship operation, and shipboard administration, in order to cope successfully with the challenges of the marine industry;
  4. Cultivate analytical skills, problem solving tactics, and critical thinking;
  5. Promote ethics, job responsibility and moral practices;
  6. Establish the importance of the safe carrying out of the officer in charge of a navigational watch duties, both at sea and in port;
  7. Promote life-long learning and continuous education through Deck Officer trainings and advanced degrees;
  8. Cover at least the minimum International Maritime Organization (IMO) standard of competence for officer in charge of an officer in charge of a navigational watch (STCW 2010 Convention Chapter II, Section AII/1. IMO model course 7.03 Functions 1, 2 & 3);
  9. Develop skills for effective communication with co-workers, Chief Officers, Masters, shipping experts, and the public on topics related to technical concepts, risks, and recommendations;
  10. Offer an insight of the most important elements of the ship’s economic management so as to elevate the officer’s professional competitiveness.

Specific Objectives

  1. Equip students with fundamental knowledge and analytical skills, for the use of navigational equipment on board, along with simulators and laboratory experience in order to cope successfully in the challenging field of nautical science;
  2. Facilitate learning and training in the field of nautical science which are directly linked to industry and current state-of-the-art technology;
  3. Provide the theoretical and computational skills necessary for the solution of applied and theoretical marine problems in the field of nautical science;
  4. Provide practical and experimental hands-on and one year on-board experience that allows the students to link directly to fundamental knowledge and theory;
  5. Prepare students to work alone or in groups in order to provide solutions to various nautical problems/situations;
  6. Provide students the opportunity to develop specialized knowledge and technical competence in their field of expertise in order to become successful professional deck officers and promote the company’s vision;
  7. Obtain certain knowledge related to: Navigation; Cargo Handling and Stowage; Controlling the Operation of the Ship and Care of Persons on Board, all at the Operational level based on the IMO STCW (Standards of Training, Certifications and Watchkeeping) competency.

Career Prospects

Having completed their studies and their 12-month onboard practical placement as active crew members on merchant marine ships, the 3rd Deck Officers graduates will acquire:

• The Certificate of Competence (CoC) of the Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch (Section A-II/I) from the Cyprus Maritime Academy

• The BSc in Nautical Science from Intercollege

How to apply

Entry Requirements

Must hold a High School Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualification with an average grade of 15 out of 20 or its equivalent. A concentration in Mathematics and/or Physics is preferred. Applicants are required to possess a minimum of 75% in Mathematics or successfully pass a placement test in Mathematics
