Course Summary

The purpose of the Program "Physical Education and Sports Sciences" is to provide a high level academic education and applied knowledge for the vocational preparation of sports scientists and physical educators teachers, in the area of Sports, Recreation and Health. Graduates will acquire educational skills that will enable them to successfully work in the private and public sector of exercise and sport services. The curriculum offers knowledge in the theory and practice of physical education and sports, and in fields such as training, rehabilitation, tourism, recreation and health, while encouraging the production of new knowledge. The Program "Physical Education and Sports Sciences" is in Greek and is located in Limassol.

Key Learning Outcomes

It is expected that with completion of their studies, graduates will obtain:

  • The necessary training that will enable them to teach effectively the course of physical education in schools.
  • Knowledge and skills so that they can develop training programs in the field of sports based on training periodization principles and the multidisciplinary support of competitive sport preparation.
  • The necessary experiences to offer their services in the field of sports, recreation and health.
  • An integrated academic background and practical skills so that they can design specialised exercise programs that encapsulate the new knowledge produced and the new directions created for various population categories with a view to health and well-being.
  • Skills and abilities that will enable them to plan and organize outdoor recreational activities with the aim of developing and promoting sports tourism.
  • The necessary knowledge of the techniques, skills and methodologies for the teaching of sports in various ages with the required scientific knowledge from the sports sciences.
  • The appropriate skills that will enable them to carry out high-level research in the fields of physical education, sport and health.

Structure of the Program

This is a four year (8 semesters) degree and is achieved with the completion of 240 ECTS. Most courses come from the sports sciences and the methodical teaching of sports. The first two years of study cover courses in the basic fields of physical education and sports science. In these, the student receives the necessary skills that will enable him/her to choose the specialization according to his/her interests. In the third and fourth year of studies, the student selects one of the two specializations, either the "Competitive Sport" or the "Recreational Sport-Tourism-Health", which offer increased and specialized theoretical knowledge and practical training, as described below.

1. Competitive Sport Specialization

The purpose of this specialization is to provide students with the opportunity to expand their theoretical and practical knowledge in High Performance Sport through qualitative and quantitative preparation and planning of sport training and competition. The current specialization is characterized by the comprehensive knowledge in a specific sport of choice, which develops qualified coaches and sport scientists for developmental ages and high-performance sport.

2.    Recreational Sport-Tourism-Health Specialization

The purpose of this specialization is to provide students with the opportunity to focus on the area of Recreational Exercise for Health Promotion. Students will obtain the required theoretical and practical knowledge to effectively and safely prescribe and supervise exercise programs in various populations, ages, and fitness levels, with a main aim to enhance health and increase fitness level of the general population. Limassol is a coastal city in Cyprus and is rapidly developing its tourist infrastructure. It provides various opportunities for growth in indoors and outdoors activities.

The current specialization provides the opportunity to the students to specialize in one of the following areas:

  • Outdoor Activities and Sport Tourism
  • Exercise, Fitness and Health.

Career Prospects

Graduates of the "Physical Education and Sport Sciences” Program can be employed as sport scientists, physical education teachers and coaches in both the private and the public sector. In the private sector they have the opportunity to be employed in private primary and secondary schools, sports organizations/businesses, gyms, rehabilitation centers, private clubs, academies, groups, programs of recreational sport, while in the public sector graduates can teach in secondary education. Also, graduates have the opportunity to be employed as administrative employees to sports organizations and businesses of governmental and non-governmental sport organisations.

The program also provides the appropriate background expertise for those wishing to follow specific areas of sport and exercise studies, such as exercise physiology, sport management, sport psychology etc. or to pursue a career in research.
The graduates of the program are eligible to register to the Cyprus Sports Organization.

How to apply

Candidates for a bachelor degree program should submit a school leaving certificate from a recognized six-form secondary school (high school) with an average grade of 75% (Greek Cypriot secondary schools) or a grade “C” or its equivalent (other secondary schools), or equivalent qualification. Candidates who submit a six-form secondary school leaving certificate but do not meet the above grade requirements may be admitted on a probationary status, if they show potential for educational advancement. The probationary status will be removed, subject to a satisfactory academic performance. Candidates admitted on probationary status may also be asked to enroll in foundation courses in order to improve their skills and/or to take reduced load.

Application deadline

Frederick University academic year consists of the fall and spring semesters. The calendar is arranged so that students may start classes either during the last week of September or the first week of February. Candidates may submit an application for admission in any of the semesters. Due to the fact that formalities for the issue of an entry visa take at least 6 weeks, candidates are urged to file an application at least 8 weeks prior to the expected date of enrolment. Students are expected to be on campus prior to the beginning of the intended semester/session. In response to arising need, courses could be provided within the summer period.

Qualification requirements

Under the immigration regulations, and depending on their nationality, applicants should follow the relevant procedure and submit the required documents as described below:

A. Nationals of EU countries
Candidates who are nationals of EU countries can enter Cyprus as visitors. On arrival at Frederick University they must submit to the Admission Office the following:

  1. A fully completed application form.
  2. An application fee of Euro 25 (non-refundable).
  3. Attested (certified true) copies of their academic qualifications.
  4. Evidence of proficiency in English, (if available).
  5. A photocopy of their passport. The passport should be valid for at least one year from the date of their arrival to Cyprus.
  6. A recent certificate of good conduct issued by the police of the candidate's country of origin or residence, if necessary translated in Greek or English. The good conduct certificate should be original and issued less than 6 months prior to the beginning of the semester for which the student is applying. The names and titles of the persons issuing and certifying the document should be clearly stated therein.

Furthermore, they must pay the registration fee, the semester tuition fees, and register for subjects. Next they must apply to the Migration Department for a temporary residence permit. The application to the Migration Department must be supported by evidence that they have paid their tuition fees for the semester, have enough funds for their initial living expenses and have obtained local health insurance coverage.

B. Applicants from non EU countries
International Students from non EU countries need to have a valid student visa in order to be allowed to enter Cyprus. The issue of an entry visa takes about 6 weeks from the date of the submission of the application. It is therefore recommended that candidates submit their application at least 8 weeks before the beginning of the semester. Cyprus Migration Department requirements in respect of the issue of a student visa, which from time to time may be modified, are available to candidates in a separate document.

Applicants are requested to contact the Office of Admissions to receive information and guidance regarding the proper documentation and formalities to be followed.

Additional entry requirements

Personal interviews are not normally required as part of the admission process; however, Frederick University reserves the right to request an interview before making a final decision on accepting an applicant.
