Course Summary

The MA in Social Work aims at promoting the social work profession by providing specialized and quality social work education to students from a social work or other relevant academic background. By doing so, it prepares them to become ethical, skilled and competent professionals and leaders in direct and administrative and community practice. Respect to diversity and the promotion of social justice permeate the philosophy of the program.

The language of instruction is Greek.

Key Learning Outcomes

  1. Apply appropriate knowledge, skills and values in the areas of (a) clinical practice or (b) community development and social administration.
  2. Evaluate and select the appropriate among a variety of clinical intervention methods that pertains to a specific problem faced by families, children and adolescents.
  3. Engage in research for practice and program evaluation and use relevant computing technologies and other tools for the management and analysis of research data.
  4. Identify and analyze existing as well as emerging social problems.
  5. Formulate social policies and critically analyze and evaluate the impact of existing social policies.
  6. Use consultation and supervision appropriate to social work practice.
  7. Develop interdisciplinary knowledge and the skills necessary to successfully work in interdisciplinary teams.

Career Prospects

The graduates of the Program have the knowledge and skills required for clinical practice with families, children and adolescents as well as the leadership skills required for the management and administration of social welfare agencies. Graduates can be employed in state and local authority social services departments, hospitals, clinics and voluntary organisations in a variety of social work settings.

Assessment Method

Clinical Social Work with Families, Children and Adolescents

 

Qualification Requirements

The MA in Social Work and Social Administration program is based on the credit accumulation system of study. Students must accumulate 90 ECTS credits in order to graduate. The program comprises a taught part (formal classes), a field experience (minimum 600 hours practice) in a social welfare agency (public, Local Authorities, NGO, Not Profit Organisations, clinical settings, etc) as well as a research part (Master Dissertation). Students are required to complete the taught part before undertaking the Master Dissertation.

The first semester is considered a foundation semester and two introduction courses taught are common for students of both specializations, while three courses are specific to the specialization the student will choose. Courses in the second semester have the same structure: two of them are common for students of both specializations, while two courses are specific to one specialization; also, students have to undertake Field Work I (300 hours). In the third semester students have to undertake Field Work II (300 hours), the dissertation and one common course of both specializations in advanced social research methods.

How to apply

Candidates for a master degree must submit a recognized bachelor degree or qualification deemed to be equivalent to degree level as well as the official transcripts (grade reports) of their first-degree studies. In addition, there could be special requirements for various master programs.

Application deadline

Frederick University academic year consists of the fall and spring semesters. The calendar is arranged so that students may start classes either during the last week of September or the first week of February. Candidates may submit an application for admission in any of the semesters. Due to the fact that formalities for the issue of an entry visa take at least 6 weeks, candidates are urged to file an application at least 8 weeks prior to the expected date of enrolment. Students are expected to be on campus prior to the beginning of the intended semester/session. In response to arising need, courses could be provided within the summer period.

Entry requirements

Qualification requirements

Candidates who are nationals of EU countries can enter Cyprus as visitors. On arrival at Frederick University they must submit to the Admission Office the following:

  1. A fully completed application form.
  2. An application fee of Euro 25 (non-refundable).
  3. Attested (certified true) copies of their academic qualifications.
  4. Evidence of proficiency in English, (if available).
  5. A photocopy of their passport. The passport should be valid for at least one year from the date of their arrival to Cyprus.
  6. A recent certificate of good conduct issued by the police of the candidate's country of origin or residence, if necessary translated in Greek or English. The good conduct certificate should be original and issued less than 6 months prior to the beginning of the semester for which the student is applying. The names and titles of the persons issuing and certifying the document should be clearly stated therein.

Furthermore, they must pay the registration fee, the semester tuition fees, and register for subjects. Next they must apply to the Migration Department for a temporary residence permit. The application to the Migration Department must be supported by evidence that they have paid their tuition fees for the semester, have enough funds for their initial living expenses and have obtained local health insurance coverage.

B. Applicants from non EU countries
International Students from non EU countries need to have a valid student visa in order to be allowed to enter Cyprus. The issue of an entry visa takes about 6 weeks from the date of the submission of the application. It is therefore recommended that candidates submit their application at least 8 weeks before the beginning of the semester. Cyprus Migration Department requirements in respect of the issue of a student visa, which from time to time may be modified, are available to candidates in a separate document.

Applicants are requested to contact the Office of Admissions to receive information and guidance regarding the proper documentation and formalities to be followed.

Specific Admission Requirements

Admission to the program is divided into two stages:

1st Stage: Candidates are required to submit the following:

  • A complete application form
  • A detailed resume (CV)
  • An academic or professional reference letter
  • A personal statement outlining the reasons for wishing to attend the MA in Social Work program.

2nd Stage: Interview
Successful candidates of the first stage are interviewed by a three member committee. In the interview the committee seeks to determine which candidates are able to respond effectively to the demands of the program, taking into account the motivation and interest but also the overall composition and scientific competence.

Recognition of Prior Learning

There are no specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning for this Program. Candidates can be granted transfer credits according to the general arrangements for recognition of prior learning of the University.
